PROCUREMENT GUIDE

How to Specify an Industrial Proximity Sensor

A procurement checklist for matching a sensor to its target and electrical connection.

Describe what must be detected

Record target material, size and the distance between target and sensor. Include the surrounding installation conditions. Similar-looking sensors can use different sensing technologies, so a housing photograph is only part of the identification.

Check the mounting arrangement

Measure the available installation space and record the installed mounting style. Review the manufacturer instructions for the selected model, including clearance and positioning requirements. Avoid assuming that a matching thread or body size guarantees a suitable replacement.

Confirm the electrical connection

Record supply voltage, output type, switching behavior, cable length or connector pinout as applicable. Verify the receiving control input requirements against the sensor documentation. Ask for a wiring diagram when replacing an unidentified part.

Document the replacement decision

Provide the full existing code, a label image and the machine application. Treat proposed alternatives as candidates requiring technical review. Confirm electrical, mechanical and application suitability before approving a substitute.
